Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon.com, paid $250 million – from his own pocket, not the company – for the Washington Post. The newspaper posted a $54 million operating loss on $582 million in revenue in 2012. Perhaps Bezos is not the businessman everyone thinks he is because he passed up on eight companies in the Russell 3,000 index that posted profit margins more than 50 percent in the past year.
