The winter of 1609 must have been a brutal one indeed for members of the Jamestown colony. Doug Owsley of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History recently announced that they had found clear evidence of cannibalism. The remains of a 14-year old girl were found with dog and squirrel bones signaling that they were consumed by fellow colonists. The account dovetails with one of Captain John Smith who described an instance where a man ate his wife.
