India, which has been experiencing a crisis of conscience since a young woman was gang raped and subsequently died in Delhi, is now in the press for yet another abusive practice against women that is just as institutionalized. A young girl told the police that her parents had entered her into a four-week marriage arrangement with a Sudanese sex tourist. The practice, which is common in the southern city of Hyderbad, exploits both the poverty of the people living in the area and a loophole in Islamic law where prostitution is illegal but short marriage contracts are not.
