MetLife Appoints Hele as CFO

John C. R. Hele will join MetLife Inc., New York, N.Y., as executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Sept. 4. Hele will report to Steven A. Kandarian, chairman, president and CEO.

Hele most recently served as executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer of Arch Capital Group Ltd., a public limited liability company that writes insurance and reinsurance globally through operations in Bermuda, the United States, Europe and Canada.

Prior to joining Arch Capital in 2009, Hele was chief financial officer and a member of the executive board of ING Group N.V. As CFO, Hele was based in Amsterdam and had responsibility for a large global financial function in over 60 countries. He was also responsible for financial controls and reporting as well as capital management and tax reporting. During his six-year tenure at ING, Hele was also deputy chief financial officer, general manager and chief insurance risk officer, responsible for global insurance risk management. Hele also served as group actuary.

Hele served as chief executive officer of Worldinsure, Bermuda, a technology company that automated life insurance underwriting, from 1999 to 2003. Prior to that, he spent 11 years with Merrill Lynch in investment banking, marketing and finance positions. In addition, Hele held various actuarial, finance and business roles at Crown Life in Toronto.

Hele has been a member of the CFO Forum in Europe, the chair of the Chief Risk Officer Forum, and is a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America promoted Emily Reitan to senior director of Strategy and Business Development responsible for Allianz Life’s market and business development strategy, marketing planning and the company’s retirement strategy.

Previously, Reitan was director of executive projects where she managed the office of the CEO. She led key strategic projects on behalf of the CEO and coordinated deliverables for the parent company, Allianz SE, and other operating entities within Allianz globally. Prior to that, Emily was the chief financial officer for Questar Capital, a subsidiary of Allianz Life, responsible for modeling, business planning, regulatory reporting and audits. Before joining Allianz Life in 2005, Reitan was a senior financial analyst for Cardinal Health based in San Diego, Calif.

Reitan received her bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. She also earned a master’s degree in international economic policy from American University in Washington, D.C. Reitan is a Financial and Operations Principal and holds FINRA Series 7, 24, and 27 registrations.

National Life GroupNational Life Group, Montpelier, Vt., appointed John Blumberg as general agent for a new agency in Westchester County, N.Y. Blumberg previously represented Mass Mutual and Northwestern Mutual Insurance Companies.  He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and holds FINRA registrations 7, 24, 51, 63 and 66.

James Ortenzio has been appointed general manager of National Life’s New Jersey region. Ortenzio previously worked with MetLife as a managing director. While there, his agency led MetLife in virtually all productivity measures in the last three years. He was also one of only two MetLife managers to qualify for the company’s Management Hall of Fame twice.

Julio Soria has been named general manager of the company’s South Florida agency. Prior to joining National Life, Soria served as agency director for South Florida with Mass Mutual, where he was consistently recognized as a top performer among his peers. In addition, Soria has held leadership roles at New York Life, Prudential Financial Services and The MONY Group.

Pam Blalock has joined National Life Group’s leadership team as vice president and regional development officer. She will support the company’s career agencies in Albany and Long Island, New York; Delaware; Atlanta; Northern New England; the Pacific Southwest; Southern New England and Virginia to support their growth initiatives.

Securian Financial Group, St. Paul, Minn., has launched its online Book of Business program to provide retirement plan advisors quick access to client servicing information, reports and data.

The Book of Business:

  • Provides plan and investment data to help clients complete periodic plan reviews concisely and on time;
  • Helps advisors build customized service strategies and execute targeted participant campaigns;
  • Provides client specific performance, expenses and ratings.

The tool includes guides that show how to use the reports along with links to participant materials that help advisors choose targeted messages for communicating with specific audiences.

The Book of Business is one of a suite of tools advisors can use to serve their Securian clients. Others include the Client Servicing Calendar that reminds clients about important plan deadlines. Fiduciary Focus explains in clear language the plan sponsors’ fiduciary responsibilities, best practices and strategies for mitigating risk.

Lockton Omaha, Omaha, Neb., has hired Shane Jacobsen as vice president, producer, to its Health and Welfare team. He will be responsible for employee benefits consulting and new business development in health and welfare insurance for clients. 

Most recently, Jacobsen was co-owner of Maximum HEALTH Solutions, an Omaha-based wellness company centered on offering customized program options for employers and their wellness needs. Jacobsen’s team of nurses and consultants has also joined Lockton Omaha to continue educating and motivating employees to become involved in, and responsible for, their health. 

The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, New York, N.Y., has started its expansion into the greater Boston area. Patrick Rastiello, senior managing director at Aon Benfield, and Jim Wallace, vice president at Aspen Specialty Insurance, are spearheading the formation of the IICF chapter in Boston, and will serve on the board. The rest of the board includes: Bonnie Bystrek, Tower Group Companies; Shaun Kelly, Ironshore; David McIntosh, Aon Benfield; Leah Rastiello, AmTrust North America, Inc.; Joe Surette, Zurich; and Ron Willett, Chartis. Emily Rastiello of Aon Affinity and Marcy Cochran of Aon Benfield will serve on board committees for the new chapter. The first IICF event in the Boston area will be IICF Week of Giving, Oct. 13-20. The weeklong event matches volunteers from the insurance industry with charities to serve in charitable and community efforts in the area.
