Prenuptial agreements have been around in the United States since the late 19th century, but their use really picked up with the advent of the celebrity marriage. Paul McCartney married Heather Mills without a prenuptial agreement and the divorce cost him $48 million. McCartney has since remarried, again, without a prenup. Guy Ritchie said he did not want a dime when he split with Madonna, however, the settlement reached last year ranged between $76 million and $90 million. Tiger Woods rewrote his prenup to get Elin Nordegren to stick around after his transgressions surfaced, but she didn’t and left with a reported $110 million. Michael Jordan and ex-wife Juanita Vanoy Jordan couldn’t make it work after a second attempt and she took $168 million—one-third of his total worth. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s divorce was one for the tabloids. It cost him $1.7 billion and he was remarried just 17 days after the divorce was finalized.
