Even though common sense might tell us that smaller groups are more productive and efficient, there is an entrenched belief that putting more people on a project will yield better results. To those who know better, this looks like a leader lacking confidence in his original group, or an insurance policy. Imposing a cap on the number of people in a project group is not the answer. Small is a relative term that can only be assessed based on the nature of each company’s project. Project groups require a leader who will enforce a simplistic approach by deciding who must remain in the meeting, and who must go. Do not give into “mercy invitations.” A person is either critical to the meeting or they aren’t. It’s not personal, it’s just business.
