Eric H. Schultz, President and CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Inc., has been elected by colleagues as the new Chair of the Board of Directors at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

“As the new chair, I will lead our charge to help ensure all Americans have access to care and to identify and address the root causes of our nation’s medical cost and quality challenges.  We must pursue truly systemic solutions if reform is to be successful,” Schultz stated in a press release.

“Eric’s deep experience and proven leadership abilities will be a vital asset to the board as our industry deals with the significant challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni.

Schultz has only been with Harvard Pilgrim for a year and a half. Prior to joining Harvard Pilgrim in March 2010, Schultz was president and CEO of Fallon Community Health Plan (FCHP) for a decade  Schultz also held executive positions with CIGNA Healthcare, Prudential Healthcare, and served as Medical Group Administrator for Nashville Healthcare Group.

AHIP’s members provide health and supplemental benefits to more than 200 million Americans through employer-sponsored coverage, the individual insurance market, and public programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.  AHIP advocates for public policies that expand access to affordable health care coverage to all Americans through a competitive marketplace that fosters choice, quality and innovation.  It recently filed an amicus brief  with the 11th Circuit this brief consistent it’s longstanding position that the insurance market regulations Congress enacted in the ACA and the individual mandate are inextricably linked.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals is the case that struck down the individual mandate as unconstitutional, but did not consider whether the 2014 insurance market reforms, or other related provisions of the law, should also be struck down with the mandate.
