Tonya Bowman Manning to Lead SOA

Members of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) have picked a 2012-2013 president who says she wants to make a priority of creating and promoting new areas of actuarial practice.

Manning will serve as president-elect while waiting to become president in October 2012, at the SOA’s annual meeting in Washington.

Manning is an actuary at the U.S. Treasury Department, where she works on projects involving employee plans, according to the SOA, Schaumburg, Ill.

Before Manning went to work for the Treasury Department, she spent 22 years at the consulting arm of Aon Corp., Chicago (NYSE:AON), and she was the chief actuary for the U.S. retirement practice.

She has been vice president of the SOA.

Manning has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Although Manning has talked about expanding actuaries’ areas of practice, she says she also wants to keep traditional areas of practice strong and relevant.

“I will also work to ensure actuaries’ voices are heard in the important conversations of today,” Manning says in a statement. “While our research and analytics often support important debates and decisions, we can do more to bring actuaries front and center in the discussions of today’s issues, such as health care, increases in longevity, the sustainability of public pensions, and the effective forecasting and management of financial risk.”

The 3 new SOA vice presidents elected this year are Jeremy Gold, Abe Gootzeit and Martine Sohier.
