Active-duty military personnel can buy a product that ensures their ability to replace their Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage with commercial coverage even if they suffer a severe war-related injury.

USAA Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of the United Services Automobile Association, San Antonio, says it has been offering the insurability protection for about 5 years as a rider available with a term life policy.

The term life policy is designed to appeal to military personnel who already have bought SGLI coverage through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The current SGLI maximum benefit is $400,000.

The insurability rider can provide access to life coverage even for military personnel who suffer conditions such as traumatic brain injury, USAA Life says.
