Personnel Changes: New York State, Sterling Life, Others

The New York State Insurance Department has named Matthew Gaul deputy superintendent for the life industry.

Gaul previously was a special counsel at the department.

Gaul succeeds Kermitt Brooks, who has been both life deputy superintendent and first deputy superintendent, or second in command of the department. Brooks will continue to be the first deputy superintendent.

In addition to overseeing life insurers, Gaul will oversee New York state public pension funds.

Gaul has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University and a law degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles.

In other personnel news:

- Sterling Life Insurance Company, Bellingham, Wash., has hired Ronald Bendes to be chief marketing officer.

Bendes previously was vice president, sales, at the Conseco Insurance Group unit at Conseco Inc., Carmel, Ind.

Sterling Life sells products to Medicare beneficiaries.

The company is a unit of Munich Health, a U.S. arm of M?nchener R?ckversicherungs-Gesellschaft A.G., Munich, Germany.

- ING Groep N.V., Amsterdam, has expanded its U.S. multicultural sales team to include more staffers with expertise in reaching the Hispanic market, the company says.

Andres Vargas Escobar, vice president of multicultural sales operations, will be based in ING’s Windsor, Conn., office, and Juan Pablo Troncoso Philippi, manager of sales support, will be based in Irvine, Calif.

Nydia Monarrez Lozano, manager of sales support, will be based in Tampa, Fla.

Erika Contreras Escobar, business coordinator, will be based in Windsor.

- Great-West Retirement Services, Greenwood Village, Colo., a unit of Power Corp. of Canada, Montreal, has hired Doug Rosendahl to be regional sales director for San Diego, Riverside and Imperial counties in California.

Rosendahl previously worked in sales at Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa.

- The Houston office of Aon Consulting, a unit of Aon Corp., Chicago, has hired Eddie Franco to be a vice president with the global benefits practice.

Franco has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics for management from Brunel University, a U.K. university.
