In a holiday-shortened week, the big news was that unemployment continued to rise, this time to another 26-year high of 9.5% in June 2009.

The G8 summit begins July 8 in Naples; it runs through Friday, July 10. On July 9, chain stores will release June sales figures, while on the same day weekly jobless claims will be reported.

This week, the House Financial Services subcommittee and full committee will hold hearings July 9 and 10 on systemic risk regulation, OTC derivatives regulation, and the House bill that would designate some TARP money for homeowners on July 9 and 10 . Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Committee holds hearings on climate change legislation on July 8.
