A study of personal preparedness for retirement in the U.S. finds 86% of Americans do not have any idea about how much retirement income they will have.

Only 14% of Americans feel well prepared for retirement, and 48% say they have never had access to any form of general financial education, according to the fifth annual “Future of Retirement” report by HSBC Insurance Services, Bridgewater, N.J., a unit of HSBC Holdings P.L.C., London.

The survey also found 53% have never sought any professional financial advice.

Although 62% think they understood their short-term finances very well, just 34% said they understood their long-term finances very well

As a result of the U.S. economic downturn, 14% say they have reduced or stopped payments into a retirement plan.
