Jessica Cervantes, 18, has won the 2009 Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award.
Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York, sponsors the scholarship contest, which recognizes girls ages 12 to 18 who have demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurship.
Cervantes, who received a $5,000 scholarship, founded Popsy Cakes, Miami, a company that sells a popsicle-cupcake hybrid that comes on an edible cookie stick, inside recyclable packaging. She donates 5% of her annual net profits to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The second prize winner, Christina Johnson, 18, started Homestyle Caterers, Bronx, N.Y.; the Hamilton Art Gallery; and Bring-it-On, a youth leadership organization.
The third prize winner, Carly Houlahan, 15, started Hives for Lives, Devon, Pa., a company that produces honey and other bee-produced products to help raise money for cancer research. In the past 5 years, her organization has raised $150,000 for cancer hospitals and research centers.
