Letter to the editor: Carrier stability in question

Cal DesVoigne writes: Prospects are not the only people who may seem frozen by the recession in planning for long term care needs. Producers also are now concerned with the stability of major carriers that market LTC. Where do you go? Who do you trust to be around when these plans are needed?

Both financial outlooks and ratings are being reduced. Due to reserve issues on aggressive annuity sales activities, some carriers are not only shutting down any new business but also terminating producer contracts. So what was once a pretty easy issue of determining where LTC business should or could be sent, companies you and your client could once rely on are now in question. It’s not business as usual.

The need is still there and will continue to increase. But where to go, who to recommend and feel comfortable with is getting to be a real concern.
