AARP recently released one-page fact sheets outlining how Social Security is used in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. The guides are available as PDFs at www.aarp.org.

Here are some highlights:

  • Nationally, 91 percent of older citizens receive Social Security. Forty-seven percent would have incomes below the poverty line if they did not receive Social Security.
  • Connecticut has the highest average personal income ($50,762), second only to Washington, D.C. ($57,746).
  • Thirty-eight percent of Mississippi residents over 65 depend on Social Security as their only source of income.
