More U.S. adults say they feel as if they are struggling.

Researchers at Healthways Inc., Nashville, Tenn., a wellness firm, and the Gallup Organization, Princeton, N.J., say only about 36% of the consumers participating in their Well-Being Index survey series say they are thriving, down from about 45% at the beginning of the year.

The percentage who describe themselves as “struggling” has increased to 60%, from 46%.

The researchers base the index on the work of a survey team that places 1,000 calls a day, 7 days a week.
