The board of Life of the South Corp. has voted to change the company’s name to Fortegra Financial Corp.

The life insurance units of the newly renamed Fortegra, Jacksonville, Fla., have been selling credit life products and other products in 30 states and have the authority to operate in about a dozen more states, Fortegra says.

The company would like to sell stock to the public through an initial public offering, and investment bankers said a name without a regional reference would be more appropriate, the company says.

The company notes that it is is completing an acquisition that will give it a significant presence in the Southwest and on the West Coast.

The insurance company operating subsidiaries will continue to use the names they have been using, the company says.
