The New York Times says the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is letting institutional shareholders force universal health measures into some public companies’ proxy statements.

The shareholders want the companies to adopt “principles of health care reform,” such as a belief that health insurance should be universal and affordable, the Times reports.

General Electric Co., Fairfield, Conn., is an example of a company that has adopted health insurance access principles, the Times says.
