The Duck Drives Again, And The Gorilla Advises

Two insurers are finding new ways to use their spokesmascots.

Aflac Inc., Columbus, Ohio, a worksite benefits company, has included the Aflac Duck in a new television commercial that shows him driving a NASCAR race car – and inadvertently blinding the other drivers with his feathers.

The 30-second spot, which also features NASCAR driver Carl Edwards asking, “Well, if you’re ever sick and can’t work, Aflac pays cash fast to help keep you in the race, right?” is set to air nationwide Sunday during the Kobalt Tools 500 race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, then run on major broadcast networks and cable channels starting Monday.

Another insurer, AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company, New York, a unit of AXA S.A., Paris, is using its 800-pound gorilla mascot to give financial advice on its Web site, at Document Link.

The gorilla sits in an office chair and greets first-time visitors to the site with one greeting.

When consumers return to the site, the gorilla will tell them, “Thanks for checking in again. Every retirement plan could use a little updating now and then…but what do I know? I’m just the 800-pound gorilla in the room.”
