The U. S. Division of Sun Life Financial announced several additions to its Sun Universal ProtectorPlus universal life product.

Among them: a new, optional long term care rider that can provide up to $20,000 in monthly benefits for qualifying insureds, and a reduction in premiums from 3% to 8% for non-tobacco issue for ages 35 to 65.

Sun Life, Toronto, says the LTC rider is available on policies of $250,000 or greater, with monthly benefits of up to $20,000, payable to qualifying policyholders for up to 50 months, depending upon face amount.

The rider also provides for acceleration of the policy's death benefit. That benefit would provide access of up to 75% of the base policy face amount in the event of a terminal illness, Sun Life says.

Among other features, the policy also offers an optional surrender charge modification endorsement that would waive some policy surrender charges in specific situations.
