A large insurer has completed a previously announced acquisition of a dental insurer.

MetLife Inc., New York, has acquired SafeGuard Health Enterprises Inc., Aliso Viejo, Calif., through a purchase, MetLife says.

The price of the deal was not announced.

MetLife now provides or administers dental coverage for about 21 million people.

SafeGuard sells dental and vision benefits in California, Florida, Texas and Nevada through health maintenance organization subsidiaries in these states as well as through an insurance subsidiary, SafeHealth Life Insurance Company.

SafeGuard has been working with MetLife for several years to sell group dental coverage packages that combine a dental HMO plan option with a dental preferred provider organization plan option.
