A large health insurer is trying to take a long-range approach to supporting its community.

UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., has announced a 10-year, $100 million initiative to support nonprofit organizations in Minnesota.

The United Minnesota program, which is supposed to supplement the company’s current giving efforts, will support organizations such as Portico Healthnet, a group that helps people without health coverage, and the Minnesota Early Learning Foundation, a nonprofit preschool program.
