A unit of CIGNA Corp. that manages mental health care and substance abuse treatment says aggressive support can save an average of $3,000 per enrolled member.

CIGNA Behavioral Health, Eden Prairie, part of CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia, compared 286 behavioral health program members who received daily or weekly contacts from advocates with 517 members of a control group.

All study subjects suffered from severe depression and other complex mental health problems, CIGNA says.

Aggressive care management led to a 53% decrease in inpatient admissions, a 14% increase in medication compliance, and average savings of about $3,134 during program enrollment, CIGNA says.
