Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan is sponsoring its sixth annual employee weight-loss competition.

Michigan Blue, Detroit, reports that 64 teams are competing to meet exercise and personal weight loss goals by an April 1 deadline.

The company is encouraging employees to exercise by walking inside, and it has added healthy foods and nutritional information to employee cafeteria menus, the company says.

In 2006, the 530 employees who participated lost an average of 7 pounds each, enough to meet about 70% of their total weight loss goal, Michigan Blue reports.

Michigan Blue also has a follow-on program that encourages employees to keep exercising, and 95% of the employees enrolled in the program kept off the weight they lost, Michigan Blue says.
