The Volunteer State is the latest state to get a new insurance commissioner.

Tennessee Gov. Philip Bredesen, a Democrat, has picked Leslie Shechter Newman to be commissioner of the state Department of Commerce and Insurance.

Newman succeeds Paula Flowers.

Bredesen appointed Flowers to be insurance commissioner in 2004. She is chair of the Receivership and Insolvency Task Force at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kansas City, Mo.

Newman is a partner at Farmer & Luna, Nashville, Tenn., a law firm. She worked at the Metropolitan Nashville Department of Law from 1994 to 2000.

Newman has a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from Washington University.
