On the 1-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans says its organization and its nearly 3 million members combined to generate $17 million for hurricane relief through direct donations and fund raising.

Thrivent, a life insurance company in Minneapolis, says hundreds of its members and employees traveled to devastated areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to provide hours of service for recovery projects over the past year.

Thrivent members donated and raised $8 million, with Thrivent itself contributing an additional $1.5 million.

Local Thrivent member volunteer groups along the Gulf Coast donated and raised another $2 million, with Thrivent Financial providing a $500,000 grant to address other local needs for hurricane victims.

Thrivent Financial says it also committed $5 million to long-term Gulf Coast recovery through an alliance with Habitat for Humanity.
