U.S. units of ING Groep N.V. are cutting rates and easing underwriting requirements for their ING TermSmart and ING TermSmart*NY term life policies.

The units, ReliaStar Life Insurance Company, Minneapolis, and a sister company, ReliaStar Life Insurance Company of New York, are reducing rates in most age and underwriting classes, according to ING, Amsterdam.

The ReliaStar companies also are adding a select no-tobacco underwriting class; eliminating cancer deaths and deaths of siblings as criteria for super preferred rates; increasing weight maximums, especially for women; and increasing maximum cholesterol limits for its Super Preferred No Tobacco category.

The companies also will look at treated cholesterol levels when evaluating applicants for Super Preferred rates.

ING sells the TermSmart policy outside of New York, and its New York unit sells the TermSmart*NY policy in New York.
