Giving one company control over both disability leave management and family and medical leave management can lead to big savings.

UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., is reporting that conclusion in a report based on an analysis of lost-time data from 2001 to 2004 for 144,460 employees working for UnumProvident customers.

Customers that combined management for both types of leave saved an average of $120 per disability claimant when compared with customers that hired UnumProvident only to handle disability management services, UnumProvident says.

Integrating leave management services led to a 22% reduction in the average lost work days per short-term disability claim and a 36% reduction in the percentage of repeat short-term disability claimants, the company says.
