An Allentown, Pa., company has agreed to offer long term care insurance to applicants who fail to qualify for LTC coverage from a Chicago competitor.[@@]

The Pennsylvania company, Penn Treaty American Corp., says its insurance subsidiaries will start a pilot program that will sell LTC insurance coverage through career agents with K.F. Agency Inc., who normally sell LTC insurance coverage from Bankers Life and Casualty Company.

Bankers Life is a unit of Conseco Inc., Carmel, Ind.

Penn Treaty will consider the K.F. Agency applications only when Bankers Life declines the applications because of medical underwriting considerations, Penn Treaty says.

Penn Treaty executives say they believe Penn Treaty will be able to accept a majority of the applications rejected by Bankers Life because Penn Treaty has set up a broader, 5-class LTC underwriting system.
