LONDON (HedgeWorld.com)–Barclays Global Investors hired Stan Beckers as managing director and senior investment strategist for its European active equity business, a new position.

Mr. Beckers will apply his skills to BGI’s quantitative investment strategies used in the firm’s long-only funds and its long/short market neutral hedge funds, spokesman Richard King said.

The way BGI’s investment philosophy works, quantitative strategies that try to identify good companies on the long-only side can perform equally well on the short side, finding not-so-good companies, Mr. King said. By extension, Mr. Beckers’ work will benefit both the long-only and hedge funds.

“Stan Beckers has tremendous knowledge and experience of quantitative asset management,” said Matthew Annable, BGI’s chief investment officer for active equity in Europe. “BGI’s active management business can only benefit from him joining the team.”

Mr. Beckers spent nearly 20 years working at Barra Inc., where he established and ran its non-U.S. operations and its London office. Most recently, he set up and ran the investment arm for Kedge Capital Fund Management Ltd. Prior to that he was global head of investments for West LB Asset Management (UK) Ltd.
