NU Online News Service, Sept. 29, 2003, 1:43 p.m. EDT – Aetna Inc., Hartford, is trying to use quality measures to pick the doctors in a new specialist physician network.

Managers are choosing the doctors in the Aexcel network by looking at indicators for factors such as efficiency, number of Aetna members served and clinical outcomes.

The first specialties included in the network will be cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, gastroenterology, general surgery, obstetrics-gynecology and orthopedics.

Aetna is testing the network design by offering it alongside traditional managed care provider networks in the Dallas-Fort Worth, North Florida and Seattle-Western Washington markets.
