Jan. 6, 2002 — Former Pioneer Investments Inc. money manager Robert Junkin has joined crosstown Boston rival John Hancock Funds.

Junkin became part of the team that oversees the $388-million J Hancock Large Cap Equity Fund/A (TAGRX). The team’s other members are lead manager Paul Berlinguet, and co-managers Robert Uek and Thomas Norton.

At Pioneer, Junkin had helped run Pioneer Growth Shares/A (MOMGX) and Pioneer Mid Cap Growth Fund/A (PITHX) from November 2001 to last November. Eric Weigel continues as the sole manager of both portfolios. Pioneer has no plans to replace Junkin, a company spokeswoman said.

Junkin also had helped manage Pioneer Science & Technology Fund/A (PTCAX), which was recently liquidated.

Before joining Pioneer, Junkin was an analyst with ABN AMRO Corp., where he focused on medical technology and health care companies. Prior to that he held a similar position at Mabon Securities. He has also served as a finance manager at Elan Pharma Inc., and as an accountant at Price Waterhouse.
