NU Online News Service, Nov. 6, 10:18 a.m. – The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Hartford, says Thomas M. Marra will succeed Lon A. Smith as president of The Hartford’s life company Jan. 1.

Smith, who has led Hartford Life since 1989, will retire at the end of the year.

Marra, 43, will continue as chief operating officer of Hartford Life.

Smith, 62, will retire as vice chairman and member of The Hartford’s board of directors, but he will continue to serve as a member of the boards of directors of The Hartford-sponsored mutual funds, the company says.

Smith joined The Hartford in 1968. He took over as president of Hartford Life in 1989.

Smith has served as a member of The Hartford’s board of directors since 1991, and vice chairman of The Hartford Financial Services Group since 1997. He is a graduate of Babson College and holds the Certificate of Management Accounting designation, and is a member of the board of directors of the American Council of Life Insurers, Washington.

Marra joined Hartford Life in 1980 in the actuarial department. In 1989 he was appointed vice president of individual annuities, and in 1994 was named senior vice president and director of individual life and annuities. Two years later, he was appointed executive vice president of Hartford Life.

In 1998, Marra was elected to the board of the old Hartford Life Inc., and in 2000 he was named chief operating officer of Hartford Life.

Marra holds a bachelor of science degree from St. Bonaventure University, New York. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Schaumburg, Ill., and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, Washington.
