Giuliani: Body Bags Not Good WTC Death Toll Indicator

NU Online News Service, Sept. 13, 10:45 a.m. – New York City has ordered 11,000 body bags in the past few days and has about 30,000 available to handle casualties from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Manhattan World Trade Center complex, but the body bag figure does not correlate with the number of casualties, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said today.

The fires, explosions and structural collapses that destroyed the trade center’s famous 110-story twin towers have blown many bodies apart, and rescue workers need a separate bag for each body part that they find, Giuliani reported.

So far, rescue workers have found 94 bodies and 70 body parts, Giuliani said.
