When you attend social events, you can expect certain questions to come in your direction. Since people know you are a financial advisor (or learn pretty quickly), they often ask, “How’s the market?” You don’t know their level of interest, but you need to give an answer.
Let us start with the answer to avoid: “I put all my clients into managed money, so I don’t know what the market is doing and I don’t care.” (I have heard this answer before!) It sounds unprofessional. It also sounds like you don’t put the interests of your client first. The unspoken message is “As long as I get paid, I don’t care.”
When I was a financial advisor, my first branch manager told us: “Do not leave the office without checking what the market is doing.” Back in the days before smartphones, you were able to tell people: “The Dow is up by (x) points.” Back then, that was an adequate answer.
Today you need to be more detail oriented. This can also be an opportunity to position yourself as a subject matter expert. Here are six ways to showcase your expertise.
