The Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday that Natasha Vij Greiner, director of the Division of Investment Management, will depart the agency effective July 4.

Greiner has served at the agency for more than 23 years. She took the helm at the IM division in March 2024, replacing William Birdthistle.

“Natasha’s steadfast leadership and strong judgment have been invaluable assets to the SEC throughout her long and distinguished career,” said SEC Chairman Paul Atkins. “I am grateful for her strategic counsel since I’ve become Chairman. Her unwavering commitment to the agency’s mission and her ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes with clarity will have a lasting effect.”

The Division of Investment Management oversees investment companies (e.g., mutual funds, closed-end funds, business development companies, unit investment trusts, variable insurance products, and exchange-traded funds) and investment advisors.

“As I reflect on my 23 years at the SEC, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey across the divisions of Investment Management, Enforcement, Examinations, and Trading and Markets,” Greiner added in the statement. “It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve in various capacities at the SEC, culminating as Director of the Division of Investment Management. Throughout my tenure, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and integrity of the staff that define this remarkable agency.”

Greiner said at the Investment Adviser Association's annual compliance conference on March 7 that after three years, "the industry is still grappling" with the SEC's marketing rule, and that after taking over the IM director's role a year ago, it was a priority for her to look at the "pain points" related to the rule — and "what isn't working."

Greiner previously served as deputy director of the Division of Examinations and as the national associate director of the investment adviser/investment company examination program, which includes the Private Funds Unit, and was the associate director of the home office IA/IC examination program.

Greiner received her J.D. from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law and graduated cum laude with a B.S. from James Madison University.
