New York Life has filled a top post with someone who has been rising up through its ranks for more than 20 years.
The New York-based life insurer and asset manager named Ramon Casanova to be head of life insurance solutions.
Casanova will take charge of product development and management, strategy, outside distribution and operations for life insurance. He will also work to maintain and improve the performance of the individual life insurance policies already on the company's books.
Casanova succeeds Todd Taylor, who's leaving the life solutions post to become head of New York Life Direct, a business that sells life insurance directly to consumers.
Casanova will report to Dylan Huang, New York Life's head of product solutions.
Casanova has a bachelor's degree in math from McGill University and a master's degree in math from the University of Chicago. He's a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
He started working for the company in 2002. He has worked in the retail annuities business and the group benefits business as well as the life insurance business.
He serves on the life insurance advisory board at LIMRA.
What it means: At the big life insurers, many of the top posts continue to go to people with top quantitative skills.
Some other math majors who have moved up recently include Deanna Strable, a Northwestern University math major who recently became the chief executive officer of Principal Financial, and Matt Wion, a Pennsylvania State University math major who took over as head of retail annuities at New York Life about a year ago.
