MassMutual has picked Joe Mallee to be the head of MassMutual Financial Advisors.
Mallee is now near the top of the advisor recruiting food chain: His job is to grow the reach, productivity and efficiency of MassMutual's advisors.
MassMutual is a policyholder-owned, Springfield, Massachusetts-based life insurer with $356 billion in assets and about $1 trillion of life insurance in force.
Mallee has been the chief executive officer of MassMutual Eastern Pennsylvania, a MassMutual agency.
He succeeds John Vaccaro, who's retiring. He'll report to Paul LaPiana, MassMutual's head of brand, product and affiliated distribution.
Mallee has a bachelor's degree in finance from LaSalle University.
He got his start in financial services by working as an account manager at Merrill Lynch, as a financial representative at Guardian and then as director of advanced planning at Independence Financial Associates. He moved to MassMutual to run the Eastern Pennsylvania agency in 2011.
He is a past president of the Lehigh Valley chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He now serves as a political ambassador at Finseca. One part of the political ambassador role involves visiting the offices of members of Congress to talk to lawmakers and their aides about how financial advisors see federal policy.
Mallee also serves on the board of Breakthrough Bike Challenge, a group that raises money for cancer research by organizing charity bike rides.
In 2014, he won a GAMA International Management Diamond Award.
What it means: Life insurers like to promote from within, but lateral transfers can take root and flourish.
