A consortium of Northwestern Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans says employees have ramped up charitable contributions.

Employees have used an employer match to contribute a total of $2.5 million to charity this year, up from $1.6 billion at the comparable point in 2007, according to Regence, Portland, Ore.

The employees may have increased contributions partly because they have concerns about the dismal economic outlook, Regence says.
