Only 6% of employers that participated in a recent survey plan to eliminate health benefits for current retirees, but 14% plan to eliminate those benefits for current employees.

Researchers at Watson Wyatt Worldwide, Washington, are reporting those findings in a summary of a recent informal survey of 163 employers that offer retiree health benefits.

Although only a relatively small percentage of the employers say they will eliminate retiree health benefits for current employees, 24% of the participants said their companies will tighten eligibility for future retirees, and 10% expect to place a new cap on employer contributions or lower an existing cap, the researchers report.
