A major insurer is supporting programs that reach out to patients facing mental illness and life-threatening health problems.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, and an affiliated foundation have awarded $2.25 in 10 separate grants to programs across the United States that help patients cope with depression and end-of-life issues.

One grant, for $278,000, will go to the Benjamin Rose Institute in Cleveland to support the development and testing of a care network for older adults and family caregivers who are suffering from depression.
