It’s hardly surprising that courthouses are busy hearing lawsuits seeking to right alleged wrongs within the financial services industry and among its clients. The business is built on trust. And it is, to borrow a quip from the infamous bank robber Willie Sutton, where the money is.

While there are allegations of misconduct, estate battles and claims of deceptive sales practices at issue, there are also plenty of hard-to-answer legal questions to fight over. Who has the right to make potentially risky, opaque private investments? When your advisor has an affair with your spouse, who can you sue and for what? Is it really OK to charge a $100 fee to close an account?
