A city’s safety significantly affects not only the return on dollars invested by residents, businesses and government, but also the quality of life for those who work and live there, SmartAsset noted in a recent report.
When they think of city safety, most people focus on violence against people and property crimes. But safety entails more than that, the report said, including vehicular and drug-overdose deaths and excessive drinking.
SmartAsset ranked the 50 biggest U.S. cities to identify the safest and least safe ones, taking into account both the crime rates and the social factors in those areas.
