Many agents give back.

Research shows:

• 96% of independent insurance agents donate to charity.
• 92% of agencies donate time.
• 65% intend to keep their volunteering at the same level.
• 29% intend to volunteer more in the future.

Giving back is commendable. You also meet plenty of people.

Do your fellow volunteers and organization members know you're an insurance agent?

This is a personal choice. Some people compartmentalize their lives. They serve alongside others but "focus on the mission." They do not ask their fellow volunteers what they do for a living or talk about their profession.

As a financial advisor or insurance agent, you're in a position to be a problem solver. Should you be hiding your lamp under a bushel basket?

Years ago, when I was writing my book, Captivating the Wealthy Investor, I interviewed people, both high-net-worth individuals and regular folks who were also volunteering, if they knew who the financial advisors in their community group were.

They might not have known every advisor in the group, but they knew the ones who made an effort to raise their visibility.

For a look at seven ways advisors gained visibility through volunteering, see the gallery accompanying this article.
