AARP Public Policy Institute's most recent livability index scores the best large, midsize and small U.S. cities in which to live. Researchers using some 50 data sources consider how livable each community is for housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement and opportunity.

They rate each city on a scale from 0 to 100, with 50 being the average location score. Those communities with more livability-friendly practices earn a score higher than 50, while those facing obstacles to livability score lower.

We sorted through the rankings to come up with the 12 most livable midsize communities, those with populations between 25,000 and 99,999. In cases of ties, we maintained AARP's ranking order.
