AARP Public Policy Institute's latest livability index draws data from some 50 sources across seven categories to find the most amenable American cities to live.

Using more than 50 data sources, the index scores communities by looking at how livable each neighborhood is for housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement and opportunity, considerations for people as they age.

Each city is scored on a scale from 0 to 100. The average location scores a 50. Those communities with more livability-friendly practices earn a score above 50 and those facing obstacles to livability score lower.

AARP divides "communities" — cities and counties — into four categories based on population. We have removed counties from this ranking to focus on cities with populations of 100,000 and above. In cases of ties, we kept AARP's ranking order.
