In a preventive move, the actress underwent a double mastectomy after learning that she carries the BRCA 1 gene which greatly increases the chances of getting breast and ovarian cancer. Doctors told her that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. Jolie announced her actions in an op-ed in the New York Times.
