The small rural commune of Diabaly was taken by Islamist rebels as the French made progress in the Eastern portion of the country. The French hope that the military intervention will last a matter of weeks before formal control can be handed back to the Malian government, buttressed by the Economic Community of West African States leaving the French in an advisory role. The French hope that the titular state of Azawad, constituting Northern Mali, will be reintegrated with the rest of the country after the Islamists are routed.
