What happens if European banks fail to get the pledges they need to get their fiscal crisis under control? The International Monetary Fund says that they will have to shed $4.5 trillion in assets—up 18 percent from its April estimate. Such an asset sale would reduce growth by 4 percentage points in Greece, Cyprus, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
