A survey released Monday by Bankrate Inc. found 38% of survey respondents are less comfortable with their financial situation than they were 12 months ago, down from 44% in December. Nineteen percent of respondents said they were feeling more comfortable, up from 14% in December.

The survey found that "roughly half" of respondents feel their net worth is about the same as it was 12 months ago, but 32% of men say their net worth has increased, compared with 22% of women. Men were also more likely to say their overall financial situation has improved. Nearly one-third of men said their financial situation has improved, up from 25% in December, compared with 23% of women.

One-third of respondents over 50 said their financial situation was worse than it was one year ago, compared with just 15% of people under 30. Likewise, older respondents were more likely to say they lacked job security. One-third of respondents between 18 and 29, and 24% of respondents between 30 and 49, said they had more job security than they did last year. Just 10% of respondents between 50 and 64 said they had more job security.

More affluent respondents were less likely to be concerned about debt; still, 17% of respondents who earned more than $75,000 said they were less comfortable with their debt level than they were 12 months ago, compared with 31% of respondents who made less than $30,000.

The survey was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International among 1,018 American adults.
